Science & Technology development, environmental conservation and sustainable livelihood issues are intricately linked to each other.  Whereas science holds the promise of better livelihoods and improved economic benefits to  people,  especially in developing countries, its wise and judicious use  is a must to promote the protection of the earth’s life support system.   This, however, is possible only if the masses are consciously aware of these inter linkages. Several governmental and non-governmental organizations are rendering a yeoman service in promoting a scientific temper, environmental awareness, traditional knowledge system and a “Bottoms-up” approach in society.

UNESCO, in its effort to infuse environmental issues in science education in developing countries, sponsored a workshop on “Integration of Environmental Issues in Science Education” in April, 2001.  The workshop was organized  by Punjab State Council for Science & Technology in India.

The Experts attended it from five South Asian countries (India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka). Workshop recommended that a network be established between organizations working in the field of science and technology education, environment education and livelihood education in these countries to facilitate exchange of information, expertise and materials. The first step in this direction, therefore, was to collect available information on such organizations.

The   present  digital directory  is an attempt in this direction. It compiles Brief information on area of focus and important activities of non governmental & governmental organizations and some reputed experts working in these areas. The directory is also available as hard copy with the PSCST & UNESCO. It is expected to promote   linkages and facilitate networking between these organizations. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to use it and suggest updating and modifications.
